Chapter 5

Miko

"What have you done with him?" an angry, shrill voice asked, jerking Miko into sudden awareness.

Miko opened his eyes, searching the space around him for the source of that angry voice. Avia stood in the doorway, the spiral staircase behind her. Her guards marched inside the room, surrounding the bed and Miko.

He spotted Gabriel standing just beside Avia, his narrowed gaze calculating. He let his eyes travel down Miko's body lazily.

"Where is the king?" Gabriel asked stalking through Avia's guards toward the bed. When he reached the foot, Gabriel grabbed hold of the blanket and ripped it off of Miko's body. Miko scrambled back toward the headboard pulling his knees tight against his chest, his mouth gaping open like a fish out of water.

"I don't know," Miko replied. "He was here when I… When we…" Miko felt his face burn as so many sets of copper eyes bored into him.

Gabriel leaned forward and sniffed. His nostrils flaring as he took in Miko scent. His eyes widened. "You smell like the king," he said as if in a daze. "Who are you?"

Miko opened his mouth to reply but before he could, a powerful burst of wind erupted in the room. His blue hair swirled around his head, and the sheets from the canopy bed blew wildly. A dragon landed on the open wall. Miko watched its strong claws dig into the stone floor as it rushed forward. The dragon did not have feathers as he had once wondered, instead his body was covered in scales perhaps a few inches wide and slick looking like oil in a dark puddle. The creature was easily the size of an SUV, but when its wings unfurled, it spanned the entire room, knocking several of Avia's guards off the cliff.

Miko should have been much more scared than he was. A normal person would have jumped to hide under the bed. Miko remained frozen, the dragon approaching him only to stand over his body and the bed in a way that was protective. Gazing up at the dragon's underbelly, Miko got the sudden urge to touch the lighter colored scales on the animal's stomach.

"What the hell are you doing here?" Damari asked, his voice unlike how it had been before. It was like hearing Damari speak from inside a huge echoing room.

"You are the Golden King!" Avia said stiffly. "You left this human alone in your lair? Alone with the golden fire? How dare you endanger everything we have worked for, for, for—"

"Silence!" Damari commanded. "Answer my question."

The remaining guards, Gabriel and Avia dipped down into bows. One knee on the ground, head lowered.

Gabriel stayed that way as he cleared his throat. "My apologies, King. But you simply disappeared. The last time anyone saw you was at dinner last night."

"And has something occurred that needs my attention?" Damari asked with that weird echoing voice. Miko squeaked as he realized Damari's dragon mouth was not moving. His voice was coming from some other source.

"No, your highness. Nothing has happened.
